Last year at Valencia

Manuel Poggiali became the first rookie to win the 250cc World Championship title since Tetsuya Harada in 1993 as he rode a controlled race to third place at Valencia last year. The Aprilia rider's only challenger, Roby Rolfo, suffered problems with his Honda and was caught up at the back of the second group for much of the race after a bad start from tenth on the grid.

Randy De Puniet set the pace at the front, challenged by home rider Toni Elias for victory until a thrilling last lap battle won by the Frenchman. Poggiali cruised home with a 22 second advantage over fourth placed Sylvain Guintoli, whilst Fonsi Nieto completed the top five.
