Edwards confident of testing Yamaha next week

Colin Edwards says he is confident that the necessary paperwork will be completed in time for him to test the Yamaha M1 at Valencia next week before making the switch to the Japanese factory team from Honda.

The American was confirmed as Valentino Rossi's team-mate for next season, replacing Carlos Checa, in a statement made by Yamaha in Australia two weeks ago. Now he is hopeful of getting a taste of what awaits him almost as soon as the current season is over.

Edwards, who started his World Superbike career with Yamaha before winning the title twice for Honda, whom he would link up with again in MotoGP the start of this season, said of the test: "We're waiting to make everything politically correct but I think it will happen and I'm looking forward to it.

"Nobody likes to have to wait until January or February to ride a new bike – personally I'd like to try it on Monday right after the race! But I've got to wait a few days and sweat it out and I'm looking forward to it.

"It will be a big season for me next year because I'll be right in the melting pot. Riding the bike that won the World Championship this year as team-mate to the man who, right now, is the best rider in the world will put me under pressure but that will be good for me.

On his relationship with Rossi, Edwards added: "We had a good time together at the Suzuka 8 hour in 2001, and we made a good team. Like I say, I'm really looking forward to it."
