Lorenzo to move up to 250 with Honda

Jorge Lorenzo today confirmed that he will be contesting the 250cc World Championship with Honda in 2005. The Spanish teenager, who has spent the past three seasons in the 125cc class with Derbi, cited professional reasons for his decision to make the early step up to the quarter-litre class but insisted he would be doing everything he could to win the final race of the season for his current team.

"I will never forget the opportunity that Derbi and Caja Madrid gave me during these three seasons in the World Championship," said Lorenzo, who has won four races for the Spanish outfit. "I have only got words of thanks and respect for them.

"I feel very proud to have represented the colours of an internationally renowned Spanish company and to have followed in the footsteps of some of the country's best riders. But my progression as a professional sportsman demands that I change categories in order to continue with the programme of development which we set ourselves.

"I would like to say goodbye to Derbi just as (Juan Pablo) Montoya did to Williams last weekend – by winning the race. Without doubt it has been a really nice part of my career which I will never forget. But as a professional I have to look towards the future and that lies in a change of category."
