Barberá gets the party started

Hector Barberá started the party early for the Spanish fans with home victory in the opening race of the day at the Gran Premio Marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana, securing the runner-up spot in the championship.

Barberá dominated proceedings in the 125cc class, taking the lead from Andrea Dovizioso on lap four before a rare mistake from the World Champion saw him run into the gravel and return to the track in twelfth place. Dovizioso mounted a strong comeback to take second place but was powerless to catch Barberá.

Alvaro Bautista held off the challenge of his fellow Spaniards Pablo Nieto and Sergio Gadea to clinch the final podium spot in third, but fifth place for Gadea represented his best result in Grand Prix racing at the end of his rookie season.

Roberto Locatelli scored sixth place on his final appearance riding a 125cc machine, with new age rules meaning the veteran Italian will be too old to compete in the minor class next season. Also making their final appearance because of the new rules today were Gino Borsoi, who led the race on the opening laps before finishing seventh, Steve Jenkner, Stefano Perugini, Mirko Giansanti, Max Sabbatani and Andrea Ballerini.
