Elías and Edwards debut with Yamaha

Toni Elías looks certain to join Yamaha's MotoGP effort after a shakedown test alongside several other MotoGP rivals riding the YZR-M1 in Fortuna colours at Valencia today. Whilst 250cc rival Dani Pedrosa was given the chance to try the Honda RC211V on Monday, with a view to stepping up to MotoGP perhaps in 2006, it seems Elías' promotion to the premier-class is more immediate.

"It's always been my dream to race in MotoGP since I was a small child so I am delighted with today," said Elías, who set a best time of 1'35.48 – just short of Pedrosa's time of 1'35.24 on the Honda. "I know it will be tough because I will be riding against the best riders in the world but I am looking forward to the challenge.

"I had heard a lot about the power of these bikes but I must admit I was surprised by how much it pulls. With that and the engine braking in particular it took me a while to get used to the bike but for the last twenty laps I really started to enjoy myself."

Colin Edwards also made his debut with Yamaha today alongside his new team-mate Valentino Rossi. Whilst Edwards spent time getting used to the current YZR-M1 and is unable to pass comment due to contractual restrictions, Rossi spent much of the day testing the first prototype of the latest-spec 2005 machine alongside test rider Wataru Yoshikawa and made the fastest unofficial lap time of the day with 1'33.45.
