Gadea celebrates best weekend

Sergio Gadea enjoyed what was undoubtedly the best weekend of his season, maybe even his life, in his hometown of Valencia on Sunday when he capped off some excellent performances in practice for the Gran Premio Marlboro de la Comunitat Valenciana with a star role in the race.

The Team Repsol Aspar rider clinched his best ever finish with fifth place after recovering from a bad start to challenge for the podium in the final few laps and rub shoulders with some of the best riders in the world.

"I knew before the season even started that this would be one of my best races," said Gadea, who set the quickest time in the first free practice and was second on the provisional grid before eventually qualifying fifth. "I had a fantastic weekend, enjoying having everybody I know around me and having good results every time I was out on track.

"I was a bit nervous before the race started, with the pressure of riding at home and starting from the second row, but the mechanics made sure I was clam on the grid and that helped.

"When I saw that I was up to second place something told me that I had to fight for everything. In the end I finished fifth and I'm really happy with the result.

"Thanks to the whole team and especially to Jorge for the opportunity he has given me this year to ride elbow to elbow with the best riders in the world and for the chance to show off my qualities as a rider in the World Championship."

125cc, 2004, Sergio Gadea
