Pablo Nieto returns to Derbi

Pablo Nieto is set to contest the 2005 125cc World Championship with Caja Madrid Derbi Racing after agreeing a deal that will see him return to the Spanish factory.

The Spanish rider has spent the past three seasons on an Aprilia as part of the Master-Repsol team directed by Jorge Martínez Aspar, but was today able to advance some details of his switch.

"The team haven't made it official yet but I will be riding on a Derbi next season," revealed Nieto. "The truth is that I'm really excited about it - not only because it is a highly competitive team but also because it was them who approached me. That was fundamental to me because it shows they have confidence in me."

"I began with them, and them with me, in a project with Youichi Ui which began in 1999. So it's a team I know well already although the bike has developed a lot since then I think the only person left is Giampiero Sacchi!" joked the 24 year old.

Nieto ended the 2004 season sixth in the championship with just two podium finishes - a campaign he is looking forward to consigning to history.

"I needed a competitive bike and they needed a competitive rider and I think we have all got what we wanted. Derbi is a factory team who have been in search of the 125cc World Championship title for several years and I am sure that they will give me the means to win it. I'm looking forward to making my definitive challenge for the title in 2005."

Derbi are expected to announce their team structure shortly, with the first winter tests planned for the start of December.
