Marathon man Melandri getting stronger

Marco Melandri says he is getting to grips with the Honda RC211V after another marathon session of laps at Valencia on Tuesday. The Italian youngster decided not to ride as the rain fell on Monday, explaining that he felt he lacked the necessary experience on the V5 to conduct meaningful testing in wet conditions.

However, bright conditions on the second day allowed him to run up 101 laps, improving his times as the day went on an equaling the effort of 1'33.4 set by his experienced team-mate Sete Gibernau.

"I'm very satisfied with the work done," said Melandri, who is hopeful of being invited to HRC tests at Sepang on January 22nd. "We lapped a lot and lap by lap my feeling with the bike improved. We have worked on the setting of the bike and tested different solutions to have more traction.

"I think we made an important step forward compared to the last test session at Jerez. Here I had much more data and points of reference compared to Jerez because we raced in Valencia one month ago so we could work better.

"I'm very happy with my race pace - I set a constant rhythm in the 1'33s on race tyres and that's not bad at all. I didn't even manage that on qualifying tyres at the Grand Prix!"
