Poggiali back with Gilera

Manuel Poggiali looks certain to return to the 125cc class in 2005 after appearing at Valencia to test for Gilera on Friday and Saturday. Poggiali, who was joined by his new team-mate Lukas Pesek, completed 24 laps on Friday but the Cheste circuit was hit by bad weather and the former 250cc World Champion's best time was a 1'58.2.

Poggiali won the 125cc World Championship for Gilera in 2001 before stepping up to the quarter-litre class in 2003, clinching the title at the first time of asking before enduring a difficult second season dogged by injuries and poor form.

Pablo Nieto continued to test for Derbi but was only able to complete six laps on Friday and, like Poggiali and Pesek, decided to sit out a second day which was completely washed out by rain.

However, the Team Aspar quartet of Jordi Carchano, Sergio Gadea, Julian Miralles and Hector Faubel all took the opportunity to complete some wet weather tests, with Miralles confirmed as a new addition to the 125cc World Championship for 2005 after finishing runner-up to Aleix Espargaró in the Spanish Championship this season.

Carchano was the fastest rider on both days, with a quickest time of 1'54.5. Several other Grand Prix hopefuls tested at Valencia, including Spanish Aprilia rider Mateo Túnez and Italian Honda pair Andrea Boscoscuro and Raffaele Filice.
