Aprilia explain Corsi choice

Aprilia have explained their surprise decision to unveil Simone Corsi as team-mate to Alex de Angelis in a new-look factory pairing in the 250cc World Championship next season.

Corsi was initially supposed to be riding for Valerio Sbarra's Team 3C in the 125cc series but the departure of Manuel Poggiali from the quarter-litre squad, with rumours that the San Marino rider is set to return to Gilera, meant that the Italian factory had to find a replacement.

An official statement from Aprilia said: "Corsi was one of the protagonists of the 125 class where he won a national single title in 2001 and climbed onto the podium in Japan during the 2004 season. For him, 2005 will be his debut year in the 250 class. At 1.78 meters tall, Simone has the right build for the 250 and also has the aggressiveness necessary for fighting at such a highly competitive level."

The new MS Aprilia Italia Corse team was unveiled at Bologna on Friday, with De Angelis and Corsi set to be decked out in bright blue and white – the traditional ‘azzuri' colours of Italy. "I will race for an official team– it's an occasion which doesn't happen often in the life of a rider and I wouldn't have missed out on this opportunity for anything in the world," commented Corsi.

"Certainly I could've used another year in the 125 to move up to the 250, but my physique seems to be ready for the increase in cylinders. I will tackle this season looking to learn the most I can from Alex and the team. My objective is to rank as one of the top rookies in the 250 class."

De Angelis enjoyed an excellent rookie season in 2004, taking fifth place overall after scoring two podiums and regularly running at the front of the pack. "I am really happy about this opportunity –– I thank Aprilia for the support that they have shown me and I hope to live up to it," said the 20 year old.

"In 2004 I learned so much. With Gianni Sandi, my Head Technician, who will also be with me during this new adventure, I was able to discover secrets about the exceptional motorcycle we are developing.

"I won't lie about my objective for 2005 - to finish the year within the top three even if I know that I'll be facing a World Champion and new and strong challengers. I know that I can keep up with them."
