Guintoli looking forward to return ‘home'

After two seasons in the 250cc World Championship as part of the Campetella Racing Team, Sylvain Guintoli will be returning ‘home' in 2005 after signing up to ride for the Equipe de France, the team with which he made his quarter-litre Grand Prix debut back in 2001.

Despite a brief flirtation with the MotoGP class in 2002 as a back-up rider for Tech 3 Yamaha and a podium finish in his first season with Campetella at the Dutch TT, Guintoli insists that a disappointing 2004 season has not affected his morale and is confident that he can recover his form with his old team.

"The 2004 season was very, very difficult," explained the 22 year old, who finished 14th overall. "Even so, my adventure with the Campetella team was positive. I will always remember how much confidence they showed in me back in December 2002, the 2003 season and the podium at Assen, the front row starts and the other experiences shared with my chief mechanic Christian Boudinot...

"We've decided to go our separate ways now and look towards other horizons. I signed for the Equipe de France last week and I'm sure some people will look at that and say I've taken a step backwards.

"But I don't share that opinion at all. I've got very high hopes for the new season; both myself and the team have come a long way since 2001. Everybody is highly motivated. We all need results and, above all, we are determined to get them."

Guintoli, who will line up alongside Gregory Leblanc in an all-French team, says preparation will be the key to success in the new season and is already looking forward to an intense period of tests. "The team have put together a very important testing programme. We'll go to Almería, Valencia, Barcelona and Jerez for a total of twelve days of tests before the first Grand Prix of the season," he explained.

"From a personal point of view I'll start my physical preparation in January to make sure that I am hitting peak fitness in time for the tests. I've challenged myself to be absolutely prepared for this season because, one way or the other, it's going to be a turning point in my career."
