Juan Pablo Montoya joins Motos Solidarias

Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya today pledged his support for Riders for Health as he was made an honorary member of the Spanish branch of the MotoGP charity, Motos Solidarias, in a special ceremony at the Jerez circuit. Montoya, who jetted in to the Spanish circuit to enjoy the second round of the MotoGP World Championship, was handed the award by charity patron Randy Mamola. Paris-Dakar winner Nani Roma and top Spanish television chef Karlos Argiñano were also made honorary members of the plight to provide transport solutions for medical relief in remote third world communities in Africa.

"It is a wonderful honour for me and I would like to thank Randy and everybody else at Motos Solidarias for this opportunity," said Montoya, a who is a regular at MotoGP races, particularly at Jerez. "My wife and I are already involved in charity work helping children enjoy sport in Colombia and it is great that we can help people in this way."

Montoya went on to praise the organisation behind MotoGP and added that he was looking forward to Sunday's race. "I think in terms of professionalism, MotoGP is definitely on a par with Formula 1," he said. "The fan base is different, the atmosphere is different and there is a different mentality about the whole place – I love it. I am looking forward to Sunday's race because MotoGP is always packed with overtaking and action, although I wouldn't want to pick a winner. I don't want to offend anybody!"

The honorary members' ceremony is one of a number of activities organised by Motos Solidarias this weekend, including the fundraising "MotoGP Experience" which offered a select group of fans the chance to complete a series of laps of the Jerez circuit on Thursday. The event, which raised €11,300, will be repeated at the other two rounds of the series on Spanish shores this season, at Catalunya and Valencia.
