Spectacular last lap onboard with Pedrosa and De Puniet
Dani Pedrosa and Randy de Puniet put on a show that will live long in the memory of the 105,000 fans who enjoyed it at first hand during the Gran Premi Gaulioises de Catalunya last Sunday, as well as the millions of people who enjoyed the action on television and, of course, the riders themselves.
With De Puniet leading as the pair crossed the finish line for the penultimate time, Pedrosa tucked his Honda in behind the Aprilia and made his move just a few corners later, launching his attack in the Campsa corner.
De Puniet knew that Pedrosa was quicker in the final series of right-handers and realised that he would have to come up with a response before then – his last opportunity coming in the hard-braking La Caixa left-hander. The Frenchman left his braking until the very last moment, squeezing inside the Spaniard and recovering a lead which he would hang on to in the final charge for the line.
Although there is still a long way to go in the championship, it could well be looked back on as the move that decided the destiny of the title, with De Puniet consolidating his championship lead and maintaining the psychological advantage over the man he sees as his main rival for the quarter-litre crown.
