Randy de Puniet admitted he was relieved to be back in action at Jerez earlier this week, with his first test as an official Aprilia rider for Team Aspar. The Frenchman faced an uncertain future after a potential move to MotoGP with Fortuna Yamaha broke down but linked up with the Spanish outfit for a three-day session and was immediately made to feel at home.

"After three months off I was really impatient to get back on the track," saud the Frenchman. "It wasn't an easy winter for me because things were up in the air for a long time and I wasn't sure what I would be doing this year.

"I was just happy to be back on the bike at Jerez. I've been motocross and supermoto training but a Grand Prix bike is like another world.

"The weather conditions we a bit tricky – it was icy cold, foggy and windy… Not the bets when you're trying to get to grips with the track again!. The ambient temperature was around 15ºC, so the track was really slippery. We weren't even able to go out until one o'clock and we had to finish but four.

"Taking all that into account and the fact that I am only just getting to know the team, I decided to stick with last year's bike, whilst Sebastián (Porto) used the new chassis right from the start.

"On the final day I tried the 2005 chassis and I was only two tenths off my best time on the old one. It felt a lot more comfortable on the entry to the corners, but I'll know more about it after the next tests.

"At the moment the most important thing is to get used to the team and learn to work in the most effective way possible. It was a good first test but there are a lot of things still to work out, especially after spending two years with Lucio Cecchinello's team."
