Gibernau and Melandri sign off with race simulation

Sete Gibernau and Marco Melandri both head to Australia for the next set of preseason tests for Team Telefónica MoviStar Honda MotoGP in optimistic mood after encouraging results from a race simulation on Sunday afternoon.

Both riders completed 21 consecutive laps in order to check their progress from the three days of tests in Malaysia and were equally impressed with the results.

"We're leaving Sepang in the knowledge that we have done a great job," said Gibernau, who set a fastest time of 2'01.383. "In order to keep moving forward we needed to do a race simulation, even though the conditions weren't ideal. I lapped faster than I ever imagined and we've still got room for improvement.

"The endurance test was really important because it gave us information so that I could come in for a quick pit stop and then go out and ride even harder. I'm really satisfied with the way we're working together with Honda and Michelin."

Melandri was only two tenths behind his team-mate with a time of 2'01.506 and is already looking forward to continuing the hard work at Phillip Island.

"I'm really happy with today and especially with the progress we've made over three days at a circuit where I have always had problems in the past," commented the Italian, who contests his first MotoGP season with Honda this year after switching from Yamaha.

"My feeling with the bike gets better every day and so does my pace. Yesterday evening we analysed all the data and decided to make a few small changes with the front fork because I had a few problems with corner entry, and this morning I felt a lot better on the bike. In the afternoon I did a run of 21 laps and wore the front tyre out.

"This test has made me realise that I'll have to change my riding style in the races because I can't afford to run out of rubber like that. I'm already looking forward to continuing tests at Phillip Island, a circuit which is really different to Sepang and one I have always liked."
