Pablo Nieto reflects on Derbi tests at Estoril

After a shakedown test at Jerez in January, the Derbi-Gilera 125cc structure continued with their preseason programme in Portugal this week with a three-day session at Estoril.

Pablo Nieto and Nico Terol, who will ride for the Caja Madrid Derbi Racing team, were joined by Lukas Pesek (Metis Derbi) and Manuel Poggiali (Metis Gilera) as they assessed the latest development work completed by the factory's racing department.

Nieto was the fastest of the four over the three days but insisted that the lap times were of secondary importance at this stage of the preseason.

"When you've got so many things to test you don't chase lap times," explained Nieto, who improved his qualifying lap from last season's Grand Prix by half a second. "I'll have time to worry about my riding later, like at the official tests for example.

"The test went really well. On the first day we had to stop at three in the afternoon because of the wind and it was also a problem on Monday, but yesterday we were able to get a good session in.

"We worked hard on different aspects of the chassis and engine, although I focused specifically on suspension. Apart from one crash, my first since going back to Derbi, it was a really positive few days."

Unofficial lap times from Estoril:

Pablo Nieto: 1.47.6
Lukas Pesek: 1.48.0
Manuel Poggiali: 1.48.3
Nicolás Terol: 1.49.5.
