Melandri gets confidence back with marathon stint

Marco Melandri was back to his best form on Saturday after consecutive crashes on the first two days of tests at Phillip Island had robbed him of valuable time as he continues to adapt to the Honda RC211V.

The Telefónica MoviStar rider today completed a marathon number of laps as he recovered his confidence with the bike, crossing the line no fewer than 122 times and ending the day with a 27-lap race simulation, setting his best time on the 20th lap.

"That was a long hard day but the important thing is that it was worth it," said Melandri, who set a best time of 1'30.90. "The two crashes on Thursday and Friday were quite demoralising and they made me lose a lot of time.

"This morning we did a few tyre tests and tried out a few modifications to the set-up. Once we had the right combination of all the material I did a race simulation with a rhythm of 1'31.4, which is better than my times from the Australian Grand Prix last year.

"The simulation was really good because, as well as being consistent, I set my fastest time of the day on the 20th lap and that is very positive. I would have liked to leave Australia with a faster lap but I know that my main focus right now has to be to work towards the races.

"At the IRTA tests in Barcelona I also want to spend time improving my performance over one lap because it is very important to know how to get yourself onto the front row at a Grand Prix. Now I can relax a little and start to think about the next test in Qatar, where I want to be fully focused again."
