Testing intensifies at Losail

Sunny weather greeted the second day of testing at Losail, Qatar, where no less than seven riders managed to lap under 1'58. Makoto Tamada and Loris Capirossi were on par with a fastest lap set in 1'57.69, beating Carlos Checa's 2004 pole time by 1.3s.

Tamada and Capirossi both tried new race tyres – respectively from Michelin and Bridgestone, and topped the timesheets ahead of Nicky Hayden, who was the fastest on the previous day. The young Repsol Honda rider finished in front of Italian team-mate Max Biaggi by just 0.001s.

Sete Gibernau was still suffering the effects of a fever and made only a few laps, while his team-mate Marco Melandri was fifth fastest ahead of Alex Barros. The Brazilian and his team-mate Troy Bayliss clocked less than 30 laps as they divided their time between the Camel Honda team test schedule and a photoshoot session.

Having suffered a heavy crash during the previous test at Phillip Island, Makoto Tamada was pleased to be back on top.
"Today I have achieved with racing tyres, a lap time more than three seconds faster than the time I have obtained during the past season qualifying sessions," explained Tamada. "This makes me even happier if I think that we'll be able to reach a higher level of competitiveness before the beginning of the championship."

"Also my physical condition is getting better. I have almost fully recovered from the hard hit that I have suffered during the slip on the Phillip Island circuit and today I was able to work all day without any sort of problem," added the Japanese.

Most teams will wrap-up tomorrow and plan to complete race simulations for their last day of testing at Losail.
