A first look at the Shanghai circuit

The MotoGP World Championship will visit three new tracks this year: Laguna Seca in the USA, Istanbul in Turkey and Shanghai in China. In December, the Shanghai International Circuit Co. and Dorna Sports, the rights holder of the MotoGP Championship, announced a seven year deal to host a round of the World premier motorcycling series in China.

The Shanghai circuit, where a Formula One round was held last year, is a brand new facility designed by renowned architect Hermann Tilke. The shape of the track mirrors the "Shang" Chinese character, which stands for "high" or "above" – and obviously inspired the name of the 17-million citizens city.

It can hold up to 200,000 spectators, including 30,000 in the main grandstands which offers a view on 80% of the track. The 5,45km track is composed of 16 turns and features a massive straight of 1,175 metres.
