Last year at Estoril

Last year Hector Barbera claimed his third win of the 2004 season in a thrilling Portuguese GP at Estoril. The Spaniard had to fend the fierce challenge of KTM Mika Kallio, who eventually went on to take his first podium of the season in second place.

Jorge Lorenzo, winner of the previous race in Brno, emerged as victor of a four-way tussle for third. The Derbi rider took the flag ahead of Pablo Nieto, Alvaro Bautista and Marco Simoncelli.

The race saw a major turnaround when early breakaway leader Andrea Dovizioso retired with a rear puncture. Casey Stoner and Simone Corsi had to retire after a strong start, as the pair clashed in the exit of the last corner, Corsi crashing in the straight and Stoner retiring moments later due to extensive damage.

As Locatelli could only take ninth, Barbera reclaimed second in the Championship and reduced the gap on series leader Dovizioso to 20 points.
