Barros on top in first free practice session

The betandwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal got underway this morning at Estoril with the three first free practice sessions. In the MotoGP class, Alex Barros posted the fastest lap in 1'40.260, topping the timesheet ahead of Suzuki's John Hopkins, keen to improve after a lacklustre weekend in Jerez.

Yamaha's Valentino Rossi was third fastest ahead of rival Sete Gibernau, who didn't seem to be put off by his shoulder injury. Riding the second Suzuki, former World Champion Kenny Roberts was fifth fastest ahead of Aussie charger Troy Bayliss. Spanish youngster Toni Elias suffered a crash during this session but didn't sustain any serious injury.

In the quarter litre class, Aprilia riders Sebastian Porto and Randy de Puniet were the fastest ahead of Dani Pedrosa, while Casey Stoner took fourth. Briton Chaz Davies took 16th.

Thomas Lüthi was the fastest in the minor class, beating Manuel Poggiali and Fabrizio Lai, while Jerez' winner Marco Simoncelli only made 16th.
