Pedrosa fends off Aprilia riders to take first provisional pole

Reigning World Champion Dani Pedrosa fended off the challenges of Aprilia riders Randy de Puniet and Sebastian Porto to take provisional pole position in the first qualifying session of the betandwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal.

Pedrosa posted the fastest lap in the late stages of session, but both de Puniet and Porto seemed to have the pace to beat him. Porto was indeed nearing on the Honda rider´s fastest time when he suffered his second crash of the session. In the last minutes of the session, de Puniet was also set to post a new fastest time but lost time behind two other riders in the last sector. The Frenchman ended in second, ahead of his Argentinean team-mate.

Alex de Angelis completed the front row of the provisional grid with the fourth fastest time, while Andrea Dovizioso posted an impressive fifth on his first outing with the 250cc Honda on the Portuguese track. Fellow 250 rookie Jorge Lorenzo posted sixth fastest, beating Italian veteran Roberto Locatelli and French privateer Sylvain Guintoli.

Honda riders Hector Barbera and Hiroshi Aoyama completed the top 10. Nocable.it Race team rider Steve Jenkner didn't take part in the session after sustaining a fracture of the right 5th metacarpal during the free practice, and consequently will miss the race.

250 action will resume tomorrow at 11:15 (local time) with the second free practice session and the final qualifying session will start at 15:15.
