> Alex Barros starts from pole for the fifth time in his career and for the first time since the Malaysian GP in 2002, which was only his second race on the four-stroke Honda. Barros finished in third place here last year, his first podium at Estoril. Barros has never won a race when he has started from pole position.

> Barros' pole position time is the fastest ever lap of the Estoril circuit by a motorcycle. The top 11 riders on the grid have lapped faster than the existing lap record set last year by Rossi.

> Sete Gibernau will be aiming to finish on the podium for the first time at Estoril, having finished in fourth place for the last two years.

> Carlos Checa starts on the front row for the first time since he qualified on pole in Qatar last year. Checa's best result at Estoril was in 2002 when he finished in second place after qualifying on pole.

> Valentino Rossi has failed to qualify on the front row for the first time since the Qatar GP last year. A victory for Rossi at Estoril will make him the first Yamaha rider ever to win five consecutive races in the premier-class.

> On each of the three previous occasions that Rossi has failed to qualify on the front row since joining Yamaha at the start of last year, he has failed to finish on the podium. At Le Mans he qualified fourth and finished fourth, and at both Rio and Qatar he qualified eighth but failed to finish on either occasion.

> Marco Melandri, who crashed out in Portugal last year on lap 8, finished on the podium at Estoril on each of his three visits to the circuit riding a 250cc machine.

> Loris Capirossi has twice finished on the podium at Estoril; in 2001 riding a Honda and in 2003 after qualifying on pole riding the Ducati.

> For the first time since the British GP last year, Ducati have two riders qualifying in the top six grid positions.

> Colin Edwards has scored points in 17 of the 18 races since the last race of 2003 at Valencia.

> Max Biaggi's second place in 2003 is the only time he has finished on the podium at the Estoril circuit.
