Rossi and Gauloises Yamaha team consolidate Championship lead

After taking victory in his previous four visits at Estoril, Valentino Rossi could only manage second place in Sunday's race, but this result was good enough to allow him to increase his Championship lead.

After his win at Jerez, taking second in Portugal meant he added 20 points to his tally, now at 45 points, and he leads the Riders' Championship with a seven-point lead over Portuguese GP Winner Alex Barros.

A consistent Marco Melandri remains in third position overall with 29 points. Max Biaggi, who clinched his first podium of the season after a disappointing seventh in Spain, sits in fourth place with 25 points.

Sete Gibernau lost precious ground today due to his crash and moved back to 6th overall. He remains on 20 points and is now just one point ahead of Shinya Nakano.

Honda and Yamaha are tied in the Constructors' Championship with 45 points, but the Gauloises Yamaha team leads the Teams' Championship with 62 points, nine points ahead of nearest rivals Camel Honda. Colin Edwards added 10 points to his team's tally, taking sixth after an off-track excursion. The Camel Honda team, in second place, have a four-point advantage over team Movistar Honda MotoGP.
