Dovizioso follows in the footsteps of Pedrosa

After an encouraging fourth place finish on his 250cc debut last week in Jerez, Andrea Dovizioso clinched his first podium in the quarter litre class on Sunday in Estoril, taking second after a hard battle against Aprilia riders Casey Stoner and Randy de Puniet.

So far, the 2004 125cc World Champion is the best rookie of what is seen by many as the strongest 250 field in years. He stands in second overall, just five points adrift from leader Pedrosa who won the 250 title last year, also on his rookie season in the class after clinching the 125 title.

"At the beginning it was a hard race due to the slick tyres because the track was wet and there was not a clean line round the circuit," explained Dovizioso. "I didn't want to take risks and so I waited until the end of the race, staying in the first group and saving the tyres for the final laps. In the closing laps I tried to be very fast in the turns in order to overtake the Aprilia, which was very fast on the straights."

"At the beginning of the season I was thinking less competitively than the more experienced riders, but during this race I was sure I would be on the podium. If I had risked more I could have overtaken Stoner. I learned a lot following Dani (Pedrosa) today. In my opinion Pedrosa is the best 250cc rider."
