Estoril remains unconquered by Pedrosa

Telefonica Movistar Honda star Dani Pedrosa finally managed to conquer his home track in Jerez two weeks ago to shake off a record of no-wins on Spanish soil, a result he was not able to replicate last weekend in Estoril.

A fourth place finish last Sunday adds to a history of frustration for the young Spaniard at Estoril. In fact, with his fourth place finish on Sunday he only managed to equal his previous best at Estoril – a circuit that seems to be proving unbreakable for Pedrosa.

The off-podium finish also put pay to the three-in-a-row win that Pedrosa has chased for so long and would have finally clinched if he had taken victory. If Pedrosa had won in Estoril, he would also have equalled the Valentino Rossi record of winning 17 races before turning 20-years-old. However, he still has 11 races in which to do it before his 20th birthday in September.

With five non-consecutive wins and one second place in 2003 and seven non-consecutive wins and four consecutive second place finishes in a row last year, Pedrosa has been a dominating force over the last few years.

Having taken the last race of last year in Valencia and winning in Jerez this year to kick-off the new season, Estoril would have secured the majority of Pedrosa´s outstanding targets – although he has also never managed a win on the Phillip Island circuit in Australia.

As it stands, Pedrosa still only needs one more win to mach the Rossi record, but now he will have to wait until the beginning of may to recommence his long-time three-in-a-row goal in Shanghai, the third leg of the championship.

250cc, 2005, Dani Pedrosa
