Kallio win puts KTM to top of the leader board

Austrian manufacturer KTM has topped the leader board in the Manufacturer's Championship due to the win on Sunday of Finnish rider Mika Kallio in the 125cc category of the Grande Premio de Portugal.

The win in Estoril saw Kallio´s second podium finish after just two races of the new season – he also took second place on the Jerez podium. It now leaves KTM tied in top position on 45 points with Italian manufacturer Aprilia.

Aprilia achieved the 45 points and joint-lead position through a combination of the Marco Simoncelli win at Jerez and Hector Faubel´s second place finish behind Kallio on Sunday.

However Kallio, KTM´s man of 2005 so far, managed to achieve the 45 points single handedly with the win at Estoril and a second place finish at Jerez behind Simoncelli. He now stands as the only 125 rider to have had two podium finishes over two races.

The two podium finishes represent a significant improvement for KTM. Now standing at two for two, the manufacturer is already half way to equalling it's 2004 result, which saw it only claim four podiums in the entire year, three for Casey Stoner and one for Kallio.

When the MotoGP World Championship moves on to Shanghai for the Grand Prix of China on May 01, KTM and Aprilia will start the race as strong leaders in the Manufacturer´s Championship. Honda will start in third place with 32 points, Gilera in fourth with 21 and Derbi in fifth with eight.

125cc, 2005, Mika Kallio
