De Puniet to make 100th GP in China

This weekend's GP in China will mark the 100th grand prix for Aprilia Aspar Team rider Randy de Puniet, a benchmark he will share with Japanese rider Shinya Nakano.

The Frenchman first appeared on the scene back in 1998 as a wildcard rider for Honda in the French GP. After only one wildcard outing he entered the 125cc grand prix series full time in 1999, this time riding Aprilia.

In 2001, with two-year's 125cc experience under his belt, De Puniet moved up to the 250cc class where he continued to ride for Aprilia. In 2003 he took his first race victory at the Catalan GP and has maintained a strong presence ever since with three more victories and a strong challenge for the 250cc title in 2004.

The 24-year rider – who partners Argentinean rider Sebastián Porto – led the championship standings in the early part of last year and is making a strong stand this season. In 2005 he has already had a strong presence and took third position on the podium at Estoril.

When de Puniet arrives in China this week for the third leg of the 2005 MotoGP World Championship, his 33 appearances in the 125cc class and 66 appearances riding 250 should provide him with veteran confidence. Amongst an impressive tally of 99 races, the Frenchman has wracked-up nine pole positions and 20 podium appearances.
