China, 28th country to host a motorcycle Grand Prix

This weekend's race in Shanghai will see China added to the long list of countries to have hosted a Grand Prix in the 56-year history of the World Championship.

The new giant of the world economy will be the 28th country to welcome the GP competition. It will also become the fifth Asian country to host the MotoGP event, following in the foot steps of Japan, Malaysia, Indonesian and Qatar, which made its MotoGP debut last year and will also feature in this year's calendar.

This GP taobao.com of China will be held in the magnificent and modern circuit of Shanghai, seeing the circuit's inauguration, and is expected to be one of the biggest events of the 2005 calendar. The arrival of the MotoGP World Championship in China will also provide a unique opportunity for the Asian country to contribute some local riders to third GP of the World Championship.

In previous years, Europe, Africa and America have played host to the majority of the GP events, but the popularity of the sport is growing rapidly in Asia due to increased media coverage and the fan base is growing exponentially.
