Rossi and Edwards to make a historic first and second place start at le Mans

Valentino Rossi will start the Grand Prix Alice de France tomorrow in pole position after clocking the fastest lap at Le Mans this afternoon in the qualifying practice session.

The reigning World Champion clocked a best lap time of 1´33.226 to snatch the pole position just 0.223 of a second in front of his American team-mate Colin Edwards, meaning the Gauloises Yamaha Team will occupy the first two grid positions at the start of tomorrow's big race.

Once again Marco Melandri was faster than his team-mate Sete Gibernau and will start tomorrow's race in third position, completing the front row; while Gibernau will head up the second row in fourth position.

Nicky Hayden (Repsol Honda Team) will join Gibernau in the second row in fifth place and Japanese rider Shinya Nakano (Kawasaki Racing Team) will complete the second row.

Team Suzuki MotoGP rider John Hopkins will head up the third row ahead of Italian Max Biaggi ( Repsol Honda Team) and the final two spots in the top ten will be occupied by Ducati riders Carlos Checa and Loris Capirossi respectively.

The qualifying session was not without accidents and Franco Battaini (WCM Blata) crashed out along with Shane Byrne (Proton KR) at the start of the session.
