Melandri and Simoncelli exchange horsepower for pedal power

Next Monday will see MotoGP riders Marco Melandri and Marco Simoncelli take part in the Nove Colli-Marco Pantani, a bicycle race that has been celebrated for more than 30 years in the Italian city of Cesenatico.

This year the traditional race will be held in honour of legendary cyclist Marco Pantani who passed away at the beginning of 2004. A true son of the sport, and one of the most spectacular cyclists in recent years, Pantani won both the Tour de France and the Giro de Italy in 1998.

Melandri, who has had a great start to the MotoGP season, will be accompanied by Simoncelli, who won the 125cc Jerez GP. Both riders will lead the way at the start of the 35th instalment of the traditional Cesenatico race.

During the event, the cyclists will have the choice of two different routes – the shorter being 130 kilometres and the longer being some 210. Exchanging the might of their powerful racing engines for a more basic pedalling technique, it will be interesting to see if the Italian riders manage to set any circuit records.
