Istanbul circuit close to completion

Istanbul circuit close to completion

Turkey will host the penultimate round of the 2005 MotoGP World Championship at the new Istanbul circuit on October 23rd. The brand new track was designed by famed designer Hermann Tilke, the man behind other modern tracks like Sepang and Shanghai.

With the track now close to completion, a spokesperson from Evren Group, the project contractor, said, the track and facilities are 95% completed. We still have landscaping work to do, and we still have to lay the final 4cm special asphalt on the track.

This final layer will only be added in June, just to protect it from the construction traffic. Additional works include the special electronics, the shopping areas and such. The circuit will be ready in June and we will hold an opening ceremony then.

The new track was put to the test back in April when local star Kenan Sofuoglu, Yamaha Motor Germanys Turkish Superstock rider, had the honour of taking the first lap of the newly-built racetrack. Sofuoglu ran the demonstration lap in front of the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Taytip Erdogan, who showed great interest in motorsport.
