Spanish rider David Checa has been called up to substitute injured Fortuna rider Toni Elias. Checa will be in Hervé Poncharal's team line up for the upcoming Gran Premio Alice d'Italia.

The reigning Endurance World Champion and winner of the last edition of the Le Mans 24h, with Yamaha GMT94, will make his MotoGP debut on the very same track on which his older brother Carlos made his 250 Grand Prix debut back in 1993, after taking a sensational seventh at the 125 European GP held at Catalunya.

The 25-year-old rider is coming back to the Grand Prix scene that he left at the end of 2002, after completing three seasons in the quarter litre class. He had made his debut in 2000 on a Honda-TSR prepared by Team Scot. In his debut year he took 19th overall, with a 9th at Donington as his best result. One year later, with the same team and a privateer Honda, he moved up to 17th overall.

In 2002, the youngest of the Checa brothers joined Lucio Cecchinello's team. After getting used to the handling of his new Aprilia, he managed to finish in the top ten on seven occasions and his best result was a 6th at Valencia.

Mugello will mark the first time that the Checa brothers, Carlos and David, will take part in the same Grand Prix.
