Flying Finn rockets to provisional pole

Championship leader Mika Kallio took the provisional pole position this afternoon in Italy, posting the fastest time of 1'59.288 on his very last lap. The Finn moved to the top of the session classification with five minutes to go and managed to fend off the challenge of Mattia Pasini.

The young Aprilia rider, who had missed the French GP after sustaining a wrist injury in le Mans, will be eager to shine in his home Grand Prix and could be a serious pole contender in the final qualifying session. Another man on Italian machinery to watch out for is Hector Faubel, who also consistently appeared in the top positions throughout the session.

Fourth fastest was Fabrizio Lai, fastest Honda rider of the day in the minor class. Czech rider Lukas Pesek posted the fifth best time, ahead of Marco Simoncelli, Gabor Talmacsi and Thomas Lüthi.
