Local favourite Valentino Rossi was the fastest in the first MotoGP free practice session at Mugello this morning, setting the best time of the hour in 1'50.778. The Italian topped the timesheet ahead of a horde of Honda riders led by Max Biaggi.

Behind the ‘Doctor' and ‘Roman Emperor' Max Biaggi in second, Movistar Honda's Sete Gibernau took third ahead of Nicky Hayden and Marco Melandri. Colin Edwards was the second fastest Yamaha rider of the session with the sixth fastest time.

On Ducati, Carlos Checa ended the session in seventh ahead of Kawasaki's Shinya Nakano and teammate Loris Capirossi, while Alex Barros took tenth.

Alex Hofmann and Makoto Tamada, back on track after a seven-week lay-off, took fourteenth and fifteenth respectively. David Checa, who is standing in for Toni Elias this weekend, concluded his first MotoGP session in seventeenth, just 0.6s adrift from teammate Ruben Xaus.
