Stoner leads Aprilia 1-2-3

Aprilia's Casey Stoner took the first spot of the provisional starting grid at Mugello this afternoon by setting the fastest lap of the first qualifying practice for the 250 Italian GP in 1'53.847. The Australian, who has already won twice this season, ended the session ahead of factory colleagues Alex de Angelis and Sebastian Porto.

"It was pretty easy to find a good pace on this track where Aprilia is very competitive," commented Stoner. "I know that this GP is very important for my team, and for Aprilia as well, but I feel confident because I like the track, even if it is quite exacting. Compared with this morning practices we made a big step forward and I feel satisfied about this first day. We have to keep it this way!"

Reigning World Champion and current series leader Dani Pedrosa was fourth fastest, having beaten fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo and French rival Randy de Puniet. Pedrosa suffered a crash in the late stages of the session and had to use his spare machine in the last few minutes.

The two final spots of the second row were taken by Hector Barbera and Hiroshi Aoyama. Andrea Ballerini was once again the top privateer, by taking 10th in the trail of Andrea Dovizioso.
