Lorenzo turns up the heat at Mugello

Spanish rookie Jorge Lorenzo was the fastest man during the second free practice session at Mugello. The Fortuna Honda rider beat provisional pole holder Casey Stoner with a best lap set in 1'53.457.

Aprilia's Casey Stoner dominated most of the session before being demoted to second by Lorenzo. Championship leader Dani Pedrosa was third fastest ahead of Sebastian Porto, winner of last year's race at Mugello.

Randy de Puniet took fifth ahead of Aprilia factory colleague Alex de Angelis, who suffered a crash midway through the session. Eighth placed Hector Barbera also suffered a spectacular highside, but was able to rejoin the track later on, ending the session behind Andrea Ballerini. The Italian privateer was one of the several riders to suffer a crash this morning, with Mirko Giansanti, Jakub Smrz and Dirk Heidolf, who is currently undergoing a medical check at the Clinica Mobile.
