David Checa remains on the Fortuna Yamaha bench

After subbing for Toni Elias at Mugello, David Checa is on standby this weekend as questions persist about Elias' condition. The Spanish rookie was able to clock 22 laps this morning and should be able to race this weekend.

The prediction comes as bittersweet news for the youngest of the Checa brothers, who will have to wait until the last minute to know whether he will ride again.

"He rode this morning and nobody expected him to do that well. He completed 22 laps and posted some good lap times," commented Checa. "I guess he has recovered pretty well, if it wasn't the case, he wouldn't be able to do so many laps on a MotoGP machine. I hope he will be able to run a good home Grand Prix. In case he can't ride tomorrow, I will be ready to stand in for him, but from what I saw, he will be able to race."

"Anyway, riding tomorrow after missing the Friday practice sessions would make things pretty difficult for me," added Checa. "I would need to have a better knowledge of the bike. My weekend in Mugello was great, even if the race wasn't trouble-free."
