Pedrosa looking to extend Championship lead

Back in 2002, Dani Pedrosa took his first ever Grand Prix win at Assen in the 125 class. The young Spaniard arrives in Holland this weekend looking to extend his advantage at the top of the 250cc World Championship.

The reigning World Champion currently has a 27-point cushion over Casey Stoner, who finished third in the 125cc race at this circuit last season after starting from pole position.

Meanwhile, Sebastián Porto, who finished runner-up in the championship to Pedrosa in 2004, will be looking to get his season up and running at the scene of his 250cc triumph one year ago. The Argentinean currently lies seventh in the championship, 74 points adrift of the leader, and has scored just one podium this season.

Several riders are fighting fit for Assen, including Andrea Dovizioso, who currently holds third in the Championship. The 125 World Champion had suffered a heavy crash at Catalunya and sustained various contusions and a small crack to his collarbone.

Jorge Lorenzo also picked up an injury eight days ago by colliding with Alex de Angelis in the race. The young Spaniard suffered a double fracture of the right collarbone but he is expected to be back on track on Thursday morning.
