Stoner sets the pace on first day of Brno test

Several 250cc and 125cc riders kicked off a two-day test at Brno, Czech Republic, on Monday, just two days after the Gauloises TT Assen. With a four-week break before the next round, at Donington Park, the factory Aprilia teams and several members of the Honda outfit decided to seize the opportunity to get in some extra mileage on the Czech track, which will play host to the 10th round of the season in late August.

Aussie Casey Stoner was the fastest with a best lap clocked in 2'03.7 on a track offering little grip. "The track condition didn't allow us to push for lap times – it was pretty dirty out there as they had a car race this weekend and it rained on Sunday," explained Stoner. "Anyway, we were able to clock some good times by the end of the day. We mainly worked on the aerodynamics, with back-to-back tests of the fairing we received at Mugello and the one we are currently using. It was a good day's work."

MS Aprilia Italia Corse's Alex de Angelis said: "We couldn't do much work. The track was quite slippery and the grip was only better by the end of day after we had laid some rubber on it." His team-mate Simone Corsi suffered a minor crash and he will have to be checked when he goes back to Italy for a niggling tendonitis in his right pinkie finger. The Aprilia riders will be joined today by Aprilia Aspar's Randy de Puniet.

In the Honda camp, Jorge Lorenzo was second fastest behind Stoner. The Japanese manufacturer was also represented by two 125 teams, Seedorf Racing and Angaia Racing.
