Proton KR makes progress but still fails to bag any points

It was a productive weekend for Team Roberts and the Proton KR machine, powered by KTM - although not rewarded with title points. Shane "Shaky" Byrne finished 17th, just inches behind the factory Suzuki of 2000 World Champion Kenny Roberts Jr.

"It was difficult at first, but the bike seemed to get better as the race went on," said Byrne, whose fastest lap was the last one. "I was trying, really trying, to get Kenny at the end, but he must have upped his pace on the last lap."

Team manager Chuck Aksland marked the weekend as a positive, as the team adapts to the latest updated version of the V4 engine, first used only three races ago.

"We've licked the reliability problems we had, and were able to work on chassis settings. Akrapovic also did a lot of work with exhausts, which has helped a little bit. The top-end performance is good, but we need to keep looking for improvements in the bottom end.

Seven races into the 2005 season and the British Superbike champion has not managed to bag any points. Byrne and team will no doubt be hoping that the US GP at Laguna Seca will mark a break into the top 15, giving them a chance to savour some long sought after points.
