Bayliss launches California attack

Troy Bayliss (Honda Pons) sprung to life this morning at Laguna Seca to set the fastest time of the first practice session, while also setting a new motorcycle track record in the process. Remarkably, the MotoGP riders had two hours of practice this morning with two back-to-back sessions to allow them to familiarise themselves with the Californian track.

Bayliss, a former winner at Laguna Seca in WSBK, topped the timesheets ahead of local heroes Nicky Hayden and John Hopkins. Colin Edwards was the fastest Yamaha rider in the session, ranking in fifth behind Sete Gibernau but ahead of team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Brazilian veteran Alex Barros took seventh ahead of Max Biaggi, Kenny Roberts Jr and Carlos Checa. Ruben Xaus and Marco Melandri both crashed during the session, and the Italian didn't take part in the second part so he could undergo a medical check at the Clinica Mobile.
