Yamaha Factory Racing celebrates double podium

Yamaha Factory Racing team riders Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi were both on the podium for the third time this year after taking second and third respectively in Sunday's USGP.

"I worked as hard as I could. I think Melandri touched me near the straight," explained Edwards, who clinched his best result ever in the MotoGP class by taking second. "Once I got passed Valentino, I pushed and pushed. I saw Nicky getting closer but the tyres were starting to go and I did everything I could to hold on.

"I was concentrating on Nicky, then on the last lap I looked and saw Rossi, so I gave it everything I could on the last lap."

Valentino Rossi didn't seem as comfortable as usual on a track known to be challenging and which he had to learn in only a few hours, whereas race winner Nicky Hayden and team-mate Edwards went into the race knowing every inch of it, having previously raced there in AMA and WSBK.

"It was a difficult, but good race. I eventually understood the track," said Rossi, who consolidated his Championship lead while second overall Marco Melandri failed to score any points after crashing on the first lap. "Anyway, I'm happy to be here with two Americans for the first race at Laguna. We had some problems. We're not at 100% and I was slow at some places."

"The track is demanding. If you lose concentration you could lose half a second. Anyway, I made some mistakes with the set-up this weekend. I followed Nicky and Colin and learned something about Laguna Seca. I didn't try to pass, but for this time it's ok."
