The MotoGP Academy bears first fruits at Catalunya

The MotoGP Academy riders were on track this weekend for the third round of the Buckler CEV, the Spanish Road Racing Championship, held at the Circuit de Catalunya. German youngster Joshua Sommer clinched his first podium of the season in a race won by Grand Prix rider Mateo Túnez, standing in for Julian Miralles at MVA Aspar.

With his first podium finish, Sommer moved up to sixth overall. Fellow MotoGP apprentice Efrén Vázquez also rode a great race in Barcelona, recovering from a low grid position to take sixth. The Spaniard is currently the best rider of the MotoGP Academy in the Spanish Championship with fourth overall. Briton Bradley Smith also delivered a noteworthy performance by completing the top 10.

The MotoGP Academy is a new project aiming to train riders from different nationalities so that they can participate in MotoGP in the near future. The Academy is formed by six riders trained under the guidance of former Grand Prix winner and new talent-spotter Alberto Puig.
