Edwards fires early warning in free practice

Colin Edwards sent a warning message to his MotoGP rivals by posting the best time of the first free practice session at Donington Park. The Gauloises Yamaha rider announced earlier this week that he would be aiming for his first Grand Prix win in England after securing consecutive podium finishes in the Netherlands and the USA.

Edwards lapped in 1'29.960, edging out his team-mate Valentino Rossi by only 0.025s. John Hopkins also had an impressive start to his weekend, posting the third fastest time on his Bridgestone-shod GSV-R.

Hopkins was closely followed by Honda riders Alex Barros, Marco Melandri and Sete Gibernau, while Kenny Roberts also had an encouraging session with seventh fastest. Troy Bayliss was eighth ahead of Laguna's winner Nicky Hayden, while Loris Capirossi completed the top 10.

On the cold track, several riders crashed out, including Carlos Checa, Ruben Xaus and Roberto Rolfo. Japanese rider Makoto Tamada crashed heavily mid-way through the session, but fortunately escaped any serious injury.
