Kallio sets an early marker by claiming provisional pole

As the 125cc Championship resumes this weekend after a month-long break, the usual suspects were back on track for the first qualifying session, which saw Mika Kallio securing the provisional pole position on his KTM.

The Finn faced tough opposition as the other title favourites were also on good form. Honda rider Tom Lüthi was demoted to second by Kallio in the closing stages of the session, while Mattia Pasini – who had suffered an early crash - wasn't able to improve his time on his last attempt and finished in third, ahead of Gabor Talmacsi.

French youngster Mike di Meglio secured fifth on the provisional grid ahead of Gilera's Manuel Poggiali and KTM's third man, Julian Simon. Japanese rookie Tomoyoshi Koyama was eight fastest ahead of Fabrizio Lai and Alvaro Bautista.

Aside from Pasini's early crash, the session saw a few minor incidents with crashes for Andrea Iannone, British wildcard Rob Guiver, Spaniard Hector Faubel and Italian Marco Simoncelli.
