Lüthi sets the pace in first free practice

Swiss youngster Thomas Lüthi was the fastest in the first free practice session at Donington Park. The Elit GP – Honda rider moved to the top of the timesheets on his last lap ahead of Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio and Kopron Racing World – Honda's Fabrizio Lai.

The Championship joint-leaders – who are just 11 points ahead of pacesetter Thomas Lüthi, Gabor Talmacsi and Mattia Pasini – took fourth and fifth respectively. Lai's team-mate Mike di Meglio had a good start to his weekend, finishing just 0.052s adrift from the Totti Top Sport – NGS rider.

Former 125cc and 250cc World Champion Manuel Poggiali posted the seventh fastest time on the Gilera, while Sergio Gadea, Marco Simoncelli and Angel Rodriguez completed the top 10.

Three riders crashed during this first free practice session: Andrea Iannone went out twice, and Lorenzo Zanetti and Sandro Cortese also suffered minor crashes.
