Rossi stamps his authority at Donington before qualifying session

Valentino Rossi was the first rider to break the 1'29 barrier this morning at Donington Park, demoting his Gauloises Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards from the top position in the late stages of the final free practice session. The riders were busy catching up on their set-up work after losing precious time in yesterday afternoon's shower-marred session.

Rossi set the fastest lap in 1'28.990, just 0.270s slower than last year's pole position record, on the penultimate of the 28 laps he clocked this morning. Edwards stood at the top of timesheets for most of the session before being beaten by his team-mate by 0.225s.

The two Yamaha riders finished ahead of a horde of Hondas, with Sete Gibernau taking third, followed by Nicky Hayden, Alex Barros, Marco Melandri and Max Biaggi. Team Suzuki's John Hopkins took eighth; while Troy Bayliss and Loris Capirossi completed the top 10.
