De Angelis fends off Honda charge

MS Aprilia Corse rider Alex de Angelis snatched provisional pole position from Fortuna Honda's Jorge Lorenzo in the first qualifying session of the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at Sachsenring. The San Marinese rider lapped in 1'28.272 to demote Lorenzo from the top of the timesheets.

Despite a last-gasp push, Movistar Honda's Dani Pedrosa was unable to match De Angelis and Lorenzo's pace, finishing 0.381s adrift from the pace-setter. Sebastian Porto was fourth fastest, ahead of Casey Stoner and Hiroshi Aoyama.

Frenchman Randy de Puniet secured seventh on the provisional grid ahead of 125 World Champion Andrea Dovizioso. After crashing, Spaniard Hector Barbera ended the session in ninth ahead of fellow rookie Simone Corsi. Anthony West took a creditable 11th place on the new 250cc KTM.
