The MotoGP riders were greeted by sunny weather and hot temperatures for the first practice session of the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, which saw Repsol Honda star Nicky Hayden setting the fastest lap. The 'Kentucky Kid', who scored his maiden win earlier this month at Laguna Seca, topped the timesheet ahead of his Honda factory colleague Sete Gibernau with a fastest lap clocked in 1'23.995.

Colin Edwards was third fastest on his Gauloises Yamaha M1, beating Ducati Marlboro's Carlos Checa by 0.038s. Hayden's team-mate Max Biaggi was fifth fastest, ahead of Suzuki's John Hopkins and Alex Barros.

Reigning World Champion and current series leader Valentino Rossi, who is making his 150th GP appearance this weekend in Germany, was only ninth fastest after suffering a crash, ending the session behind his Italian compatriot Marco Melandri. Aussie charger Troy Bayliss completed the top 10, ahead of Kenny Roberts and Loris Capirossi.
